The Biocomplexity Institute is searching for a Project Manager to serve as part of the Project Management Group to oversee and direct project deliverables associated with extramural and internal projects, which may be a combination of multi-year, multi-million dollar awards, or multiple smaller awards. Extramural projects may be grants or contracts, and provide biocomplexity infrastructure, resources, research, or other technological development in the life sciences. Internal projects may include development of internal resources, processes, IT infrastructure, or other internal needs.
The PM team is charged with assisting and providing recommendations of conceptualizing, planning, initializing, staffing, budgeting, executing, monitoring, controlling, and closing out programs and projects. Project initialization tasks may include collaborating with other BI administrative units and external resources in the development of proposals, requirements, schedules, job descriptions, information system plans, communication plans, expenditure tracking processes, subcontract statements of work, and other project management tools. Project execution and control tasks include tracking, facilitating, and adjustment of budgets, schedules, tasks, resources, requirements to ensure attainment of project goals and resolution of issues that impede project success. In addition, PM will develop required project reports, and assist in development of project-related presentations and publications, as well as project closure tasks include budget closeout, staff transfer planning, project archival, and development of final reports.
The PM will have at least a high-level understanding of the products and services the project is intended to deliver so that they understand the internal technical issues, difficulties, and opportunities in the project as well as communicate project progress, obstacles, and outcomes to management and other stakeholders who may not be experts in the project domain. The Project Manager (PM) will work closely with the Principal Investigator (PI) and other scientists to participate in managing a transdisciplinary research program. The PM will be responsible for oversight and direct project deliverables associated with the project. The PM will assist the PI in the planning, preparation and negotiation of new large-scale grant proposals and contracts.
Dependent on the qualifications of the successful candidate the position may be offered at either the Project Associate (PA) or Senior Project Associate (SPA) level. The ideal candidate will possess the following: - PhD or terminal degree with professional related experience, in Business, technical or related discipline (for SPA rank) or lesser degree with substantial related experience (for RA rank). For the following qualifications, faculty rank will be assigned according to experience (Project Associate = 1-5 years, Senior Project Associate = 6+ years with complex multi-million dollar projects. - Demonstrated experience managing the development and deployment of one or more projects of similar size and scope in the domain of the project in question, or demonstrate progressive accomplishments towards this level of management. - Excellent communication skills, both in formal and informal channels, and at multiple levels, including with sponsors, PIs, project personnel, and administrative support personnel. - Advanced analytical skills for defining business and functional requirements for project deliverables. - Demonstrated experience in developing, revising and controlling technical documentation of a complex large-scale project - Knowledge of advanced techniques of project management and coordination, for large projects: prioritizing competing demands, resource planning, budget estimation and preparation, high-quality document production and technical report writing. - Knowledge of contracting and intellectual properties procedures. - Desire/willingness to accommodate light to moderate domestic travel. - Demonstrated ability to work with principal investigators and motivate cross-functional teams. - Strong computer skills; the ability to handle multiple ongoing priorities; - Excellent interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills. - Excellent writing, analytical skills and the ability to work in teams with professionals from other disciplines. - Experience in grant writing and managing extramurally funded research projects. - Strong work habits and the ability to work independently as well as with research groups. - Excellent organizational, time management and multitasking skills. - Certification in a Project Management area such as PMP, PMI-PBA, PgMP, CAPM or other related certification.
Preferred Qualifications: - Experience with federal, state, or private and corporate contract law applications and procedures. - Experience managing large-scale funded research projects. - Experience working in an academic or research environment, preferably biocomplexity related discipline. - Knowledge of principles and practices of supervision, staff development, organization, administration and personnel management. - Techniques for conducting feasibility studies for technical projects, including assessment of risk as it relates to the probability of success or failure of technical applications. - Human clinical experience and knowledge of HIPAA regulations, IRBsubmission process, IACUC submission process and other research compliance aspects such as biosafety and chemical hygiene. - Ability to obtain the PMP certification within 1 year if already certified in another project management area.
